RIB Boat Insurance

Specialist cover for rigid inflatable boats — recreational, commercial and rescue

Licensed BrokersNo-Obligation QuoteResponse Within 24 HoursAll Vessel Types Covered

Rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) are uniquely versatile craft — used for leisure, diving, offshore fishing, water sports, commercial operations and rescue activities across the country. Their combination of rigid hull and inflatable collar creates specific marine insurance considerations that specialist brokers understand well. RIB insurance is available for all makes, sizes and uses.

What's Covered

  • Cover for all RIB types from 3m leisure craft to 10m+ commercial vessels
  • Specialist understanding of inflatable collar damage and replacement costs
  • Commercial RIB cover for dive operations, charters and rescue craft
  • Outboard engine and electronics cover included
  • Third party liability essential given the speed capability of RIBs
  • Coastal and offshore navigation endorsed for SA's most demanding conditions

What Is a RIB and Why Does It Need Specialist Cover?

A Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) combines a solid GRP or aluminium hull with an inflatable tube collar. This design delivers exceptional buoyancy, stability and safety in rough conditions — making RIBs the preferred platform for NSRI rescue operations, dive charter businesses, ocean racing support, offshore fishing and high-speed coastal cruising.

RIBs have specific insurance considerations:

Inflatable collar damage — The inflatable tube is a significant part of the vessel's value and can be damaged by UV exposure, sharp objects, abrasion and puncture. Collar replacement on a quality RIB can cost R20,000–R80,000. Standard boat policies may not explicitly cover inflatable components.

High performance risk — Performance RIBs can exceed 80 knots and are used in challenging offshore conditions. High-speed use increases both structural stress risk and the severity of any collision or capsize incident.

Commercial use patterns — Many SA RIBs are used commercially — dive charter operations in Cape Town, Sodwana Bay and the Wild Coast; NSRI volunteer units; and offshore water sports support. Commercial use requires a commercial marine policy.

Outboard horsepower — Large RIBs often carry multiple high-power outboards totalling 300–600 horsepower. The engine value alone can exceed the hull value and must be properly declared.

Types of RIB Operations in South Africa

Leisure and recreational RIBs — Used for offshore fishing, water skiing, coastal cruising and adventure boating. Found throughout the Cape coast, KZN coastline and Mozambique Channel.

Dive charter RIBs — The primary dive charter platform at sites including Two Oceans (Cape Town), Protea Banks (Shelly Beach), Sodwana Bay and Aliwal Shoal. Typically 5–7m with twin outboards.

Commercial water sports RIBs — Banana boat, tube ride and water sports instruction platforms operating at SA beach resorts.

NSRI and rescue RIBs — National Sea Rescue Institute stations throughout South Africa operate purpose-built rescue RIBs. These are separately insured through NSRI's institutional coverage.

What RIB Insurance Should Cover

A comprehensive RIB policy should include:

  • Rigid hull — GRP or aluminium hull structure and fittings
  • Inflatable collar — Full replacement cover, including UV and puncture damage
  • Outboard engines — Full declared horsepower and value
  • Electronics — GPS, chartplotter, VHF radio, fishfinder
  • Third party liability — Minimum R5 million for high-speed craft
  • Trailer — If trailered to launches
  • Commercial use — If the RIB earns any income

Submit a RIB-specific quote request and our specialist marine brokers will find the most appropriate cover for your specific vessel, use pattern and operating area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does standard boat insurance cover the inflatable collar on a RIB?

Not always — some standard boat policies do not explicitly cover inflatable components, or may limit collar replacement costs. Confirm with your broker that the inflatable collar is explicitly covered and that the declared vessel value includes the current collar replacement cost.

Can I insure a commercial dive RIB in South Africa?

Yes — commercial RIBs used for dive operations require a commercial marine policy with passenger liability cover. Standard recreational policies exclude commercial use. Our specialist brokers can arrange appropriate commercial marine cover for your dive operation.

What navigation limits are available for offshore RIB use?

Navigation limits for RIBs depend on the vessel's Coast Guard certification, engine power and intended use. Offshore navigation endorsements are available for suitably equipped and certified RIBs. Confirm your intended navigation area with your broker when obtaining a quote.

Is RIB racing covered under marine insurance?

Standard recreational and commercial policies typically exclude organised racing. An explicit racing endorsement is required for RIB offshore racing events. Always disclose racing use to your broker before any event.
