Knysna: The Garden Route's Boating Jewel

The Knysna Lagoon is one of the most distinctive waterways in South Africa — a broad, sheltered body of water spanning approximately 17 square kilometres, connected to the Indian Ocean by the iconic Knysna Heads. This narrow gap between two dramatic sandstone cliffs is navigable only in calm sea conditions, making the lagoon a protected haven for boating while offering access to the open coast for those with appropriate vessels and conditions.

The Knysna Heads: Beautiful but Demanding

The Heads passage has claimed vessels over the years when sailors have misjudged the conditions or attempted the crossing in inappropriate swells. The combination of swell refraction around the Heads, strong tidal currents, and a shallow bar creates conditions that can change from passable to dangerous rapidly. Local knowledge — and adherence to the informal 'Heads weather window' guidance — is essential. Always check with Knysna Port Control (VHF Ch 16) before attempting the passage.

Thesen Islands and the Knysna Waterfront

Thesen Island Marina provides quality berthing facilities in the heart of the Knysna Lagoon, and the Knysna Quays Waterfront offers visitor mooring and access to the town's restaurants and shops. Both facilities require current third-party liability insurance. The lagoon's houseboat community — a distinctive feature of Knysna's nautical culture — is well-established, with permanently moored vessels scattered around the lagoon's more sheltered bays.

Garden Route Coastal Cruising

Boats based at Knysna that wish to use the open coast have access to excellent coastal cruising grounds. The Garden Route coastline from Mossel Bay to Port Elizabeth offers beautiful scenery, numerous bays and anchorages, and relatively benign summer conditions. Ports of call include Mossel Bay Harbour, Plettenberg Bay, Jeffreys Bay, and Port Elizabeth — all of which can be reached within a day's coastal passage.
